NEVER TOO YOUNG TO LEAD THE WAY

NEVER TOO YOUNG TO LEAD THE WAY

Talented BAWA educator Made Suwana spent time last week with a Kindergarten class at the Australian International School.

He talked to the young students about their pets and did some role-playing about the right and wrong ways to treat animals.

Even at 3 and 4 years old, these children are learning that it is just as wrong to harm an animal as it is to hurt another human being.

BAWA knows from experience that sustainable change in a society must be driven at grassroots level and through children. That is why our specialist educators are in Bali schools and communities every day, encouraging change that will create a better future for Bali’s animals, residents and visitors.

Changing mindsets that are formed over centuries of cultural, attitudinal and behavioural influences is really challenging.

Every day BAWA rescues animals that have been cruelly abused, neglected and far too often tossed onto trash dumps or into rivers. These actions are commonplace in Bali where laws to protect animals are not well known and are seldom enforced. Reform of Indonesia’s animal welfare laws and better law enforcement is a priority BAWA

program that goes hand-in-hand with our daily education effort.

In schools and communities, our educators use especially developed tools and techniques to show children and adults how to break the cycle of cruelty to animals, unwanted animals and sickness and disease.

Importantly, we teach respect and value for the unique characteristics of Bali’s indigenous dog, an animal that is genetically significant and much misunderstood.

Without these lessons from BAWA, there is the risk that children who grow up seeing animals mistreated will repeat that behavior. And they will miss out on the love and happiness that comes with being a responsible pet owner.

Like all of BAWA’s work, our education program is funded 100% by donations from kind supporters who want to see real change in animal welfare practices in Bali.

Please help us to continue working in schools and communities by making a monthly donation to join Friends of BAWA today.

Please donate at http://www.bawabali.com/donate.

You will make a real difference now and in the future. You will help create a better Bali.
