BAWA rescued Salvato, 3-4 months old, from a ditch. His condition was life-threatening and he was in intense pain. People had thrown hot water at him when he sought help, probably after being hit by a motorbike.
Salvato’s terrible wound was infected and he underwent surgery to amputate at the elbow. While the little puppy was calm and eating well after his ordeal, vets found that a serious infection had spread to the remaining part of his leg which he was bravely using for walking and playing.
Sadly, there was no choice but to amputate higher up. Again, this plucky little puppy was soon eating well and showing us his sweet & playful nature. Despite all his pain and his terrible mistreatment in the past, Salvato was calm and responsive to care.
Kathy, who took him into her home for rehabilitation and love, recently told us: “He has begun running around and wanting to play, even jumping up on his hind legs to greet us when we come home.
“Apart from the occasional squeak when he moves wrong or tries to get up from lying down, I believe he is basically pain free now.He is losing his baby teeth and likes to chew his toy, so he is really coming out of his shell and beginning to act like a puppy! We are so happy.
“He’s a very, very good dog and is extremely brave, but his recovery has not been easy. As the painkillers and anti-inflammatories wore off he (we!) had a few bad days when he cried out in pain every time he tried to stand up. “Salvato appears to be a wise old soul and is a sweet and loving presence around us. We love him.”
Kathy is a true angel and we thank her so much for her love, care & attention for Bali’s dogs & especially for Salvato. For years Kathy has helped BAWA by fostering animals and doing valuable community & animal rescue work.
Thank you to everyone who offered a loving forever home to this little hero, but he’s a real charmer &it seems Kathy can’t give him up!
